OUR MOST POPULAR

The Watlow SD3C is a digital temperature controller that displays both current temperature and set point - but is still the 1/32 DIN size that fits MLG's small enclosure (same as the 935 series). Click here for detailed users' manual from Watlow. This controller can be used on both 110V and 220V systems, both in the US and internationally. It is easily configured for either Fahrenheit or Celsius operation (we will set it up appropriately based on your location or preference).

This may be the perfect controller for adding electronic temperature control to Silvia. It offers a 2-line display with the capability of simultaneously showing set point and current temperature. The SD3C carries a full 3-year manufacturer's warranty. And, it fits in a 1/32 DIN size enclosure! So if the larger size (typically 1/16 DIN) of other 2-line display controllers is an issue for you, then the SD3C line of kits may be the answer.

Based on the extensive testing we have done with this controller, we are very impressed. Take a look here at some real data showing impressive performance by this controller on a brand new Silvia.

As with all controllers in the Watlow line, the SD3C is rated by the manufacturer to operate at an ambient temperature of up to 65C (149F). Most other controllers are rated only up to 50C (122F). Depending upon mounting location, a rating of 50C is likely to be exceeded on a regular basis, for long periods of time.

For instance, we have measured surface temperatures on the chromed plastic surround on the grouphead of new Silvia's at between 130F and 135F under normal, brewing conditions. These temperatures are even higher while the machine is in steam mode.

So before deciding on a PID kit for your Silvia, you should carefully consider where it will be mounted, the temperatures the controller might be exposed to, and the ambient operating temperature range of the PID controller.

STEAM CONTROL

The SD3C kit is provided in a dual brew control/steam control configuration.

Control of brew temperatures is still very tightly controlled using the highly accurate PID algorithm built into the SD3C. But we can add a second output to this versatile controller. This provides tight deadband ON-OFF control for steam temperatures as well. Our testing has shown that steam temperatures can be controlled within a total bandwidth of approximately 12F using this strategy - more than close enough for very effective steaming. And far, far better than the 40F-50F range provided by the stock steam thermostat on the Silvia. (Click here for a plot showing the small deadband steam control possible).

Because of the dual SSR method this kit uses to override both the Silvia's stock thermostats, installation is very straightforward and does not require access to the steam switch for rewiring. Installation of this dual brew/steam SD3C kit will actually require slightly less time to complete than our basic brew temp control-only kit (because we provide extensive pre-wiring of the special SSR).

As with all MLG steam control kits, the change is completely transparent to the user. The steam switch, including the lighted indicator on the switch, operates normally. The only changes are the new freedom in preparing your pitcher without fear of "missing" the thermostat's OFF point. And, of course, the ability to select your preferred steam temperature digitally.
